Tampa Bay Audiology & Vestibular Testing for Auto Accidents, Slip and Fall, TBI, and Other Premises-Related Injuries

Comprehensive Hearing & Balance Evaluations by Board-Certified Audiologist D’Essence Hampton, Au.D.

At Neurology and Physical Therapy Centers of Tampa Bay, we specialize in evaluating hearing, balance, and vestibular function in individuals recovering from auto accidents, slip and fall, or other premises related accident, involving head trauma, sudden impact, or falls. These types of injuries can affect the systems responsible for hearing and equilibrium, often leading to symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss.

Trauma-Focused Audiology & Vestibular Testing

We offer a full range of diagnostic services tailored to the effects of traumatic injuries:
  • Comprehensive Audiometry Measures hearing sensitivity and speech recognition, often affected by head trauma or sudden impact during a collision or fall.
  • ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) Evaluates how sound signals travel from the ear to the brainstem. Useful for detecting nerve pathway disruptions caused by concussions or traumatic brain injuries.
  • OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) Assesses inner ear (cochlear) function, which can be compromised by loud noise exposure or blunt force trauma during an accident.
  • CVEMP (Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials) Tests the reflexes between the neck and inner ear. Whiplash or sudden neck movement during a fall or crash can impair this system.
  • OVEMP (Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials) Evaluates the connection between the eyes and upper vestibular system, which may be disrupted by head injuries or balance-related trauma.
  • ECOG (Electrocochleography) Detects abnormal fluid pressure in the inner ear, which can result from head trauma or rapid acceleration/deceleration injuries.
  • Tympanometry Measures middle ear pressure and eardrum mobility, helping identify barotrauma or pressure-related damage from impact.
  • VNG (Video Nystagmography) Analyzes eye movements to assess balance and vestibular function. This is especially important for patients with dizziness or vertigo following a concussion or fall.

TBI / Concussion Audiology Protocols

We provide specialized evaluations for individuals recovering from concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries. These protocols are designed to detect subtle auditory and vestibular deficits that may not be visible on imaging but can significantly affect daily function.
Our concussion-focused testing includes:
  • VNG for vestibular and ocular motor function
  • ABR, OAE, CVEMP, OVEMP, ECOG, and audiometry
  • Assessment of dizziness, balance instability, and auditory processing changes

How is the testing administered?

You will be in a quiet room either sitting or lying down on a cushioned mat table for the hearing exam and vestibular evaluation. It is recommended that eye makeup be removed prior to testing. You will be asked to wear over the head headphones during the hearing test, and nerve assessments and a pair of goggles for the VNG testing.

What happens after the testing?

After the testing is completed, the audiologist will interpret the results of testing and exam with the ordering physician to develop a therapeutic care plan. A canal re-positioning maneuver may be used in the cases of BPPV, immediately following the testing. Depending on the diagnosis, therapy may include vestibular rehabilitation therapy.

What is vestibular rehabilitation therapy?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of therapy incorporated to help alleviate difficulties that may be caused by vestibular disorders. It is a customized exercise-based program that is personalized for the patient's particular vestibular pathologies. VRT may include exercises that help reduce vertigo and dizziness, gaze instability , and/or imbalance and falls. Typically this is administered by a licensed physical therapist.
